Laser Hair Removal

Summer is officially here! The sun has come out and the cold, chilly wind of winter is now just a faded memory. As the seasons change, so does your wardrobe. That means, you need start putting away your jackets, long sleeve shirts, and other pieces of clothing you no longer need.

Summer is the time to flaunt your perfect figure. With the sweltering heat, the ideal wardrobe generally involves as little clothing as possible. That means, tank tops, short shorts, sundress, sleeveless tops, and swimsuits. In addition to wanting the perfect bikini body, one concern most women have is getting rid of unwanted hair.

Shaving is one of the easiest ways of getting rid of body hair. You can kiss your unwanted hair goodbye in less than 10 minutes. It doesn’t require any fancy equipment either. Frequent shaving, however, can cause the hair follicle to change direction and leads to ingrown hair. Plus, you’ll have to do it all the time if you want to stay hair-free.

If you’re sick and tired of shaving and you’re looking for an easy and effective way to remove body hair, laser hair removal may be just what you need. Keep reading to find out why it is a great way to get rid of unwanted hair.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is used to permanently reduce unwanted hair. It can be done anywhere on the body, including the arms, legs, underarms, bikini line, face, and other areas. This high-tech method uses light to destroy hair follicles. The energy from the laser is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles. This kills the follicle at its roots; thus, retarding future hair growth.

Why is it the best method of removing unwanted body hair?

Treatments are quicker than you might expect

Laser hair treatment is surprisingly quick. Treatment varies depending on the part of the body being treated. Small areas such as the underarms, upper lip, and bikini area will only take about 5 to 10 minutes. Larger areas like the legs or back may take an hour.

This is a great option for busy individuals. The treatment is so fast, you can have it done during your lunch break.

It is safe and effective

Laser hair removal works by directing a concentrated beam of light at the pigment in your hair follicles. The process may sound painful, but it’s actually not too bad.

The level of discomfort depends on the texture of the hair, area being treated, and your tolerance to pain. You may feel discomfort like a warm pinprick or a stinging sensation with each laser pulse. It may be uncomfortable, but not unbearable. An anesthetic may be used to reduce any pain and discomfort during the treatment.

While the treatment is generally safe and risk-free, there are some side effects. Redness, discomfort, skin irritation, and swelling at the treated area are quite common. These side effects appear within a few hours to a few days post treatment and are usually short-lived. An ice pack or a cool back works well on redness and swelling. Skin irritation should ease a few hours after the treatment.

Saves time

Waxing, shaving, and electrolysis are costly and time consuming. Typically, new hair growth appears within a few days to a few weeks, so you need to include it into your weekly routine.

Laser hair removal effectively delay the hair growth. The interval between treatments vary depending on the area being treated. Hair on the upper lip usually grows faster, so you will need to come back within 4 to 8 weeks. For other areas with slower hair growth, treatment sessions are generally 8 to 10 weeks apart. That means, you don’t need to make frequent trips to waxing salons. Plus, each session generally takes about 15 minutes to an hour to complete. With laser hair treatment, you’ll have more time doing things you truly enjoy.

Long-term hair reduction

Waxing and shaving removes the hair temporarily. These methods can give you a clean, smooth finish right when you need it, but the growth comes back just as it was before the removal. If you’re tired of traditional hair removal methods, you may want to give laser hair removal a try.

Laser hair removal destroys the roots, rendering them unlikely to produce new hair. It specifically targets hairs right down at the follicle, pushing it into prolonged dormancy. Although it is often touted as a form of permanent hair removal, the results aren’t permanent. The follicles that were not damaged can grow back over time, but the regrowth is often thin, fine, and lighter in color. Maintenance treatments may still be needed but will only be limited to about two to three times a year.

You may not see much difference after the first few sessions, but trust me, you’ll want to stick with it. In order to maximize the potential of zapping the follicles, you need to go in for treatment every 4 to 6 weeks. You should expect to see results within 3 months.

It’s cheaper in the long run

Let’s face it. Laser hair removal can be expensive. A session can cost you anywhere between $200 and $600, depending on the area to be treated. You may need 4 to 6 sessions to permanently reduce hair growth.

Thinking that the cost associated with the treatment is beyond their means, most people are reluctant to pursue treatment. It may be more expensive initially, but it’s actually cheaper in the long run. Sure, waxing costs less per session. But if you are to consider the cost of long-term waxing than that of laser hair removal, you will realize that laser hair removal is actually more cost effective. Once you have completed 3 to 4 sessions, you can get by with maintenance treatment every 6 months to a year. After this, you will no longer need to spend on razors, depilatory creams or regular wax treatments.

How to prepare for laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that is governed by strict regulations. You should come in for a consultation before the treatment to learn more about the process, understand the benefits and downsides, what to expect, get tips on how to prepare for it, and determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Unlike waxing, you don’t need to grow your hair before the procedure. In fact, we recommend that you shave the area you’re getting lasered at least 24 hours before your laser hair treatment to prevent scorching any of the hair surface. Waxing, plucking, and threading should be avoided a month prior to your treatment since the follicles has to be there in order for it to work.

Traditional laser works best on individuals with lighter skin and dark, coarse skin. The skin should be as light as possible during the treatment. As such, it is best to stay away from tanning beds, tanning spray, and tanning lotions. A fake tan isn’t safe either. Not only will it minimize the contrast between the skin and the hair pigment, the laser will also sizzle any pigment on your skin.
